Thanks Open for the comments, While I agree with you on Turbine's spotted history I do think they have been pretty fateful to he license especially how restrictive it can be. I do beleive WoW and EQ2 to both be more complete games but those have both matured content over several years. The character customiztion issue I think you can say is now gone with the introduction of the layered outfits just introduced in the last update. What exactly about the gameplay is lackluster per se?

I for one have been truly disappointed in LOTRO. I do not believe they did a good job with the license, and Turbine really is not a very good developer (DDO, AC2)
The game has admirable landscape graphics, and some music is nice...but compared to most other MMO's out (WoW, EQ2, etc..) I just do not believe it is as good as these games..lackluster gameplay, a bad UI, poor character customization...
Maybe with time, the content will make the game more enjoyable...but, right now...I believe EQ2 is a better choice...
Later

Thanks for the comments rao. I have to admit I really began this from getting more and more blogs I read and podcasts I listen to. It did seem to me that the "mature" gamer comments come from players with almost a decade of MMO experience. I think that is really a good thing but I also saw where my "noobness" to the genre in comparison could actually be a good thing.

I look forward to seeing more of your thoughts here because a different perspective is a great way to gain a better overall view on any subject.

While it is true that I probably fit into the roll of someone who was an early MMO'er (I didn't play UO and I wasn't there for the launch of EQ, but I picked it up a few months before the second expansion), my approach has always been a little different to these games. I've always loved raiding, but for me, these games have always been more about the journey and less about the destination. I have spent much more time learning the stories and lore than I have raiding and acquiring items.
